There are certain things one should not forget to take on a beach holiday, and a really good book is one of them. What better way is there to unwind on your holiday than enjoying a really good page-turner that you find hard to put down? And there’s no better way to enhance your appreciation of your holiday than to read a book set in the very same destination you’re spending your holiday in. One region which is particularly well-represented in great literature is Greece, so if you’re heading off to Greece and booking up your Mykonos hotels, make sure you head to your local bookshop first to get some great literature about the country.

Set on the island of Corfu, one of the great novels that is set in the area is My Family and Other Animals, which takes a hilarious look back over the author’s childhood on the island. Lesser-known by the same author is Reflections on a Marine Venus, a love letter to Rhodes, where the author lived after World War II. If you’re keen to emulate the author’s experiences, look for Rhodes hotels in the ‘new town’ area, as this was where he lived.

One Day by David Nicholls is a book which everyone must’ve heard mentioned at some point over the last two years. This huge best-seller (now also a movie) follows the lives of Dexter and Emma, two friends from college, on the same day of the year, every year. While not entirely set in Greece, the two main characters do take a holiday to the Greek islands, one of the many poignant moments in their relationship. Whatever your destination, this is an entertaining read, as the two fail in their attempt to book Greece hotels with separate holidays, and endure a hilarious skinny-dipping experience.
