During the annual meeting of the Radiological Society of North America (RSNA), a new, six-month study about growth hormone replacement was presented.
It showed increased bone formation in abdominally obese women, according to the Science Daily website. The focus theme: Forbes writer predicts $169,000 for each all-metal hip replacement compensation.
In the analysis of Miriam A. Bredella, a radiologist at the Massachusetts General Hospital and assistant professor of radiology at Harvard Medical School in Boston, this is the first time that the impact of growth hormone on bones have been studied in relation to obesity, the Science Daily suggests.
Being obese increases a person’s risk of diabetes, heart disease, stroke, arthritis and some cancers. It may also cause cardiovascular and joint diseases, high cholesterol, asthma and sleep apnoea, according to Medline Plus.
Furthermore, obesity may cause arthritis due to body weight, according to the about.com website.
If a person is obese, losing even five to 10 percent of the weight may delay or prevent some of these diseases, Medline Plus suggests.
Dr. Bredella moreover discloses that growth hormone is particularly significantly for bone health, and women with augmented belly fat have weaker bones and reduced growth hormone levels.
According to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), approximately one-third (33.8 percent) of U.S. adults are obese.
Citing information from a previous study, Dr. Bredella found that women with excess abdominal fat were at increased risk for bone loss. For this recent study, the researchers set out to determine if administration of growth hormone would increase bone formation, Science Daily says.
Based on the study of Dr. Bredella’s group, in addition to bone formation, the results also showed that growth hormone increases muscle mass, decreases belly fat and lowers cardiovascular risk markers, such as cholesterol and C-reactive protein according to Science Daily.
Dr. Bredella added that the risk is minimal. This therapy could also be applied to non-obese and postmenopausal women, as ageing is associated with reduced growth hormone secretion, which could be a potential therapy for postmenopausal osteoporosis.
It is best for a person to stay fit and with the ideal weight to prevent any health problems such as obesity, which triggers arthritis that causes chronic pain and force people to undergo hip replacements that has so far had led to several DePuy lawsuit.
