When you have been involved with marketing or otherwise engaging in business at forums, you can get very comfortable. While forums can be fun and interesting, you shouldn’t let yourself get distracted from your real purpose for participating in them. Always look for ways to leverage forums for your business, and make everything else secondary. Many forum members start off with clear goals, but then let themselves fall into trivial or even harmful habits.
There is a term that connotes a very negative implication, called a forum rat. These are people who spend an excessive amount of time in one forum or many. You could be creating a bad image for your business if you are doing this. People might start thinking that you have nothing better to do than to sit all day in the forum. It’s easy to see what road this could be headed down.
While we don’t like it, there will be times we are wrong, unfortunately. As a leader, this will happen even more and will cause you some concern at times. Always be wary of what you put in your comments, so you can be presenting the best possible appearance. There are many experts out there and you don’t want to be wrong and have them correct you. Forums make it very easy to share opinions but also to share criticism.
You will have plenty of opportunities to extend good will and positive energy to others, and that is important for many reasons. Be willing to offer support and words of encouragement if you can and it makes sense. If you have nothing helpful or meaningful to say, it’s best to not respond. One thing you don’t want to do is respond to lots of threads in order to accumulate more posts. People will realize you’re doing this, and it won’t be appreciated. That’s why you should only post when you have a helpful, supportive or thoughtful comment to make. If you spend a great deal of time frequenting forums you start to understand which members just kind of go along without ever learning the ropes. It’s so much easier to be effective and profitable with your forum marketing when you work on learning as much and going as deep as is possible. It’s the small and subtle things that offer you the most clarity and purpose and that is why it is important.
